Ponseti Casts: The First Big Step in the Treatment

The Ponseti casts are the first big step in your baby’s clubfoot treatment. And even though the idea of seeing your tiny baby with both legs in casts might feel scary at first (trust me, I’ve been there), I want to tell you what no one told me—things that might help you feel a little calmer today.

What Are Ponseti Casts?

Ponseti casts are special plaster casts that go from your baby’s toes all the way up to the top of their thigh.
They are changed weekly, and each new cast gently corrects your baby’s foot position a little more.

The doctor will check the progress every week and decide how many casts your baby needs.
Sometimes it’s four or five, sometimes a bit more.
Every baby is different, and every foot moves at its own pace.

Does It Hurt?

No, it doesn’t hurt.
Babies usually get used to them very quickly.
You’ll still see your little one smiling, moving their legs, and playing like always.

What hurts most of the time is what we feel as parents—but they, honestly, handle it better than we do.

What Helped Us Get Through This Phase

  • Easy clothing, like loose onesies or open-bottom outfits.

  • Baby wipes, to keep the exposed parts like toes and tummy clean.

  • Lots of cuddles and skin-to-skin moments, because they still need all the love and comfort they can get.

The Ponseti casts mark the first big step forward.
And even though it might feel overwhelming at first, remember—
every cast brings your baby one step closer to standing tall on their own.
